Show Information

The glittering musical comedy that celebrates love, family, and being fabulous! La Cage aux Folles tells the heartfelt and hilarious story of Georges, the owner of a dazzling drag nightclub on the French Riviera, and his partner Albin, the club’s star performer. When Georges’ son announces he’s engaged—to the daughter of a conservative politician—chaos, comedy, and sequins ensue as the couple tries to present a “normal” family dinner. Featuring the iconic anthem “I Am What I Am” and a Tony Award®–winning score by Jerry Herman, La Cage aux Folles is a joyful celebration of individuality, acceptance, and the power of love that knows no boundaries.

Show Content

La Cage aux Folles is generally recommended for audiences aged 13 and older (PG-13) due to mild adult themes, drag-based sexual innuendo, and mature dialogue. While considered a "family show" in the context of celebrating unconventional families, it features drag performances, bawdy comedy, and references to sexuality.

Role(s) you are auditioning for:
SelectCharacter NameDescriptionAdditional Information
ALBIN / ZAZA(Age: 40-55): Albin is Georges’ longtime partner and the star performer at La Cage aux Folles, where he performs in drag under the stage name Zaza. Larger-than-life, emotional, and unapologetically himself, Albin is the musical’s most dazzling character. His flamboyant presence, both onstage and off, provides much of the comedy, but his vulnerability and humanity give the story its soul.Baritone, A#2-G4
Georges(Age: 45-59): Georges is the owner and master of ceremonies at La Cage aux Folles, the glitzy drag nightclub in Saint-Tropez. Suave, charming, and endlessly adaptable, Georges is the anchor of the musical. He knows how to command the stage with polish, but he also reveals tenderness and deep loyalty in his personal life. His easy charisma makes him both a showman and a peacemaker, balancing the flamboyant world of the nightclub with the responsibilities of family life.Bass-Baritone, G2-F4
Jean-Michel(Age: 18-25): Jean-Michel is Georges’ son from a brief heterosexual liaison in his youth. Now in his twenties, Jean-Michel is earnest, idealistic, and somewhat naïve. He loves his father but often fails to fully appreciate the complexity of Georges and Albin’s relationship. His desire to marry Anne, the daughter of ultraconservative politician Edouard Dindon, sparks the central conflict of the musical.Baritone or Tenor, A#2-G4
Jacob(Age: Early 20s): Jacob is Georges and Albin’s butler—or rather, their “maid,” as he insists on dressing flamboyantly and performing his duties with camp flair. Jacob is one of the musical’s standout comic roles, often stealing scenes with his outrageous behavior and witty retorts. He serves as a servant in name only, since his dramatic personality often overshadows his supposed duties.Tenor, Bb2-Ab4
Anne Dindon(Age: 18-21): Anne is Jean-Michel’s fiancée and the daughter of Edouard and Marie Dindon. Warm, kind, and sweet-natured, she represents innocence and young love. Anne is genuinely devoted to Jean-Michel and seems less concerned with the political or social complications of their union. Her sincerity and open heart create a contrast with her father’s rigid conservatism.Mezzo-Soprano
Edouard Dindon(Age: 45-55): Edouard Dindon is Anne’s father and the primary antagonist of the musical. A staunchly conservative politician, he campaigns on a platform of “traditional family values.” His rigid worldview, moral hypocrisy, and disdain for anything outside his narrow definition of respectability put him at odds with Georges and Albin.Bass, Bb2-Eb4
Marie Dindon(Age: 45-55): Marie is Edouard Dindon’s wife and Anne’s mother. While she shares some of her husband’s traditional values, she is generally more open-minded and sympathetic. Unlike Edouard, Marie is not so quick to judge, and she becomes an unexpected ally to Georges and Albin as the story unfolds.Soprano, F4-A5
Jacqueline(Age: 30+): Jaqueline is the proprietress of a local restaurant, Chez Jaqueline, in which the “meet the parents” encounter occurs. She does not realize that Albin is in disguise, and -- assuming she is in the middle of a Zaza drag act -- asks Albin to sing “The Best of Times is Now” at the restaurant. Charming, attractive, and very theatrical.Alto
FrancisEarly 20s to Mid 40s: The fussy, particular stage manager of the La Cage nightclub. Does not dress in drag. Excellent dancer, great comic timing, sings in the ensemble.
Monsieur Renaud(Age: 40-60): Monsieur Renaud is the owner of the Promenade Cafe down the street, where Georges and Albin practice Albin’s masculine “Uncle Al” routine, in preparation for meeting Jean-Michel’s future in-laws. Must be a good mover and singer.
Les Cagelles(Age: 25-40+): Les Cagelles are the dancers at La Cage Aux Folles. They are all exquisitely beautiful, sexy men in drag. Their names are Chantal, Monique, Dermah, Nicole, Hanna, Mercedes, Bitelle, Lo Singh, Odette, Phaedra, and Clo-Clo. Must be exceptional dancers who can sing.
